Thermal Engineer (Tools Development) – Internship
Loft Orbital
Toulouse
Internship
Wanna join the adventure?
The Mechanical and Thermal Engineering team is scaling its capability in order to meet the future design
needs and deliver our satellites faster and with the best reliability possible (6 launches in 2024, 20~30
launches planned in 2025). To do so, we will need to iterate quickly on models while still retaining a very
high level of trust in our models which requires automating some of the repetitive and time-consuming
tasks.
This is where your role comes into play: based on already coded tools and requirements provided by the
team for new tools you will have the mission to develop a thermal analysis tool suite in Python.
Because we want these tools to benefit potentially every engineer in the company, this tools suite will
need to be robust with good error handling and have a friendly user interface.
What can we offer?
Our Mechanical and Thermal Engineering team has talented individual contributors both in the US and
in Europe from a variety of backgrounds. You will have the chance to join a very experienced and multi-
cultural team with individuals coming from big names in the Space Industry (SpaceX, Amazon, Airbus,
etc.).
You will be provided the best working material and all the latest software development tools (GitHub
Copilot, ChatGPT, VSCode, etc.).
Location: Toulouse office in the city center (Jeanne d’Arc metro station)
Research shows that while men apply to jobs where they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women
and other marginalized people tend to only apply when they meet 100% of the qualifications. At Loft,
we value respectful debate and people who aren’t afraid to challenge assumptions. We strongly
encourage you to apply, even if you don’t ‘check all the boxes.
About This Role (Main missions but not limited):
- Learn the basics of thermal analysis applied to spacecraft design.
- Interact with our thermal engineer based in Toulouse in order to design and develop simple to advanced thermal analysis tools. This tool suite made of model checkers, meshing tools, model building tools, post-processing tools will be used by our team.
- Create a user-friendly graphical user interfaces (GUI) for seamless tool accessibility, with potential collaboration with our UX/UI designer. There's no reason why engineering tools can't be user-friendly as well!
Must Haves:
- Engineering school studies.
- Advanced skills in Python programming, enabling you to quickly get into the role and develop a robust and efficient software tools suite.
- Experience in GUI creation with Python and Jupyter Notebooks.
- Fluent English communication skills, both written and verbal, to work effectively in our international team.
Nice to Haves:
- Exposure to satellite design principles and thermal control systems.
- Exposure to thermal and mechanical analysis.
- Familiarity with finite elements simulation tools and their applications.
- Experience with Git version control.
Who We Are
Loft Orbital builds “shareable” satellites, providing a fast & simple path to orbit for organizations that require access to space. Powered by our hardware & software products, we operate satellites, fly customer payloads onboard, and handle entire missions from end to end – significantly reducing the lead-time and risk of a traditional space mission.
Our standard interface enables us to fly multiple customer payloads on the same satellite, with capabilities such as earth imagery, weather & climate /science data collection, IoT connectivity, in-orbit demonstrations, and national security missions. Our customers trust us to manage their space infrastructure, so they can focus on what matters most to them: operating their mission and collecting their data.
At Loft, you’ll be given the autonomy and ownership to solve significant challenges, but with a close-knit and supportive team at your back. We believe that diversity and community are the foundation of an open culture. We are committed to hiring the best people regardless of background and make their time at Loft the most fulfilling period of their career.
We value kind, supportive and team-oriented collaborators. It is also crucial for us that you are a problem solver and a great communicator. As our team is international, you will need strong English skills to better collaborate, easily communicate complex ideas and convey important messages.
With 3 satellites on-orbit and a wave of exciting missions launching soon, we are scaling up quickly across our offices in San Francisco, CA | Golden, CO | and Toulouse, France.
As an international company your resume will be reviewed by people across our offices so please attach a copy in English.
