Job description:
The Centre de Physique Théorique (CPT) at the Aix-Marseille University in Marseille (France) invites applications for two postdoctoral positions in gravitational-wave astronomy/cosmology.
Successful candidates will join a newly established research program led by Dr. Michele Mancarella and funded by the Fondation A*Midex Initiative of Excellence Grant “Cosmology and Astrophysics with Gravitational waves and Galaxy surveys” (COSMOAGG). Specific interests will be focussed on gravitational-wave cosmology, large-scale inference techniques for gravitational-wave astronomy, and next-generation gravitational-wave experiments.
Ideal candidates will have a PhD in Physics or related discipline, strong programming skills, and expertise in the cross-correlation between galaxy and gravitational-wave catalogues, gravitational-wave population studies and hierarchical bayesian inference, applications of machine learning techniques, and/or forecast tools for gravitational-wave detectors of next generation, though we are open to all candidates with a strong background in gravitational-wave physics and multi-messenger astronomy. The postdoctoral fellows are expected to participate in the activities of the LISA consortium and of the Einstein Telescope Observational Science Board. They will also have the opportunity of developing their independent research lines.
The positions will last for 2+1 years and include generous research and travel resources as well as relocation expenses. The starting date can be between April and December 2024. The monthly net salary starts from around 2000 EUR for junior candidates (<3 years of experience) and 2300 EUR for senior candidates (>3 years of experience) and will increase after the first year.
The recruits will join the CPT's cosmology team, which consists of five permanent staff whose research focuses on theoretical cosmology, dark energy and modified gravity, the large-scale structure of the universe, and have access to data from the Euclid space mission. Two more postdoctoral researchers specializing in gravitational wave theory will join the team in 2024.
The wider community in Marseille includes the Centre de Physique des Particules de Marseille (CPPM) and the Laboratories d’Astrophysique de Marseille hosting cosmologists heavily involved in spectro-photometric surveys of the Universe.
Marseille is a warm, beautiful mediterranean city in the heart of the worldwide famous Provence. The CPT is located in the Luminy Campus, at the gates of the Calanques National Park, a terrestrial and marine natural wonder for climbing, snorkelling and hiking.
Applications consists in a CV with a list of publications and a two-pages research statement to be sent in a single pdf file at [email protected] with email subject “COSMOAGG application – NAME OF THE CANDIDATE”.
The application deadline is November 20th, 2023, though we will consider applications until the positions are filled.
Candidates should also arrange for at least two reference letters to be sent separately by the application deadline to the same address, including in the email subject “COSMOAGG reference letter – NAME OF THE CANDIDATE”.
We particularly welcome expressions of interest from traditionally underrepresented groups.
